Let the discussions about AI begin!
'How now AI?' is a space for sharing ideas about what AI means to us and what we care about. Come join me in exploring our relationship with AI!
“We see AI as a threat to what we care about.”
- ‘On the Razor's Edge’ report by Seismic Foundation
Seeing AI a potential threat to what we care about. This reflects what I’m hearing from so many people, regardless of their experience (or not) with AI. People are concerned about what AI is, how it is going to be used, and how its use is going to impact us.
I feel the same way.
I am a professional researcher who has spent the past 23 years building AI to help people do the things they want to do. I believe in the huge potential of AI, both of doing great good and great harm.
I also believe in equitable and fair access to ideas. I believe everyone has the right to understand what AI is and shape how it is used.
I believe equity begins with knowledge.
You are not alone
I am here to tell you:
If you feel AI is changing so fast it is hard (impossible?) to keep up, you are not alone.
If you feel AI is starting to impact everyone and everything on this planet, you are not alone.
If you want viewpoints in between AI as the ultimate productivity enhancement tool or the thing that will destroy humanity, you are not alone.
We need brave spaces and communities to talk about AI. Places with lots of different ideas that spark our learning, thinking, and doing about what is happening with AI.
How now AI? is a space for us to do just that.
What is ‘How now AI?’
How now AI? is a space to share ideas about our evolving relationship with AI.
I do a lot of reading and thinking about AI. In fact, it’s my job. But that certainly doesn’t mean I have AI “figured out”. Quite the opposite, I am aware there is so much to learn.
I want to share ideas that stand out, but just as much I want to hear what you think about these ideas, too. I want to use ideas as sparks for deeper conversations, either with people here or in your other communities (including your life outside of a screen).
My wish for How now AI? is that we build off each other to grow our understanding, create new ideas, and proactively shape our relationship with AI.
My pledge to you (and myself)
How now AI? is my passion project.
I pledge to you that I will:
Do my best to create a space that is welcoming for constructive conversation. This does not mean we have to agree. It does mean we have to be civil.
Not sell goods or services. This space is not for pushing a product or to convince you to buy something. It is for sharing ideas.
Not write using AI. I work in the AI space and use AI for many things. Writing in How now AI? is not one of them.
NOTE: I like to write with em dashes (i.e., - ), so when you see them know that it is not AI doing this - it’s me.Present a variety of viewpoints. I want to challenge our way of thinking about AI by seeking as many perspectives as I can. I want to hear your perspective. Pro-AI, anti-AI, CTO of big tech, my off-the-grid loving friend, and everything in between.
Keep the posts coming. I can’t promise a specific day of the week, but I plan to post about once a week. Sometimes more, sometimes less depending on what ideas come my way and what is going on in my life.
Come join me!

― Carl Sagan
I am a human, with many of the same hopes and fears as other humans regarding AI. I hope you will join me in exploring where we are, where we want to go, and how we can get there.
Welcome to How now AI! I hope you’ve brought your curiosity.
What are you thinking? Share your thoughts on this post or an idea for a post you’d like to see!
